George M. Whitesides is the Woodford L. and Ann A. Flowers University
Professor at Harvard University. He has been a member of the faculty
since 1982 and was Chairman of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical
Biology 1986-1989. He was a member of the faculty of the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology from 1963-1982.
In addition to his academic positions, Dr. Whitesides currently serves
as Chairman of the National Research Council's Committee on Science,
Engineering, and Public Policy (COSEPUP) and is a member of Defense
Science Research Council for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency
(DARPA). He has also served on numerous committees for the National Science
Foundation, including roles as chairman for the Chemistry Advisory
Committee (1986) and the Materials Research Advisory Committee (1993).
Currently, Dr. Whitesides is on the Board of Directors of two public
companies (Theravance Inc. and Rohm and Haas) and four private companies
(Nano-Terra Inc., WMR inc., Surface Logix Inc, and HRL). Previously he
has served on the Board of Directors for Geltex, Dexter Corporation, Life
Technologies Inc. and Advanced Magnetics Inc.
Dr. Whitesides is also a consultant in research and research management
for the chemical, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing industries. Present
active positions in consulting and on Science/Technology Advisory Boards
include Cummins Engine and Firmenich SA. Past consulting arrangements have
involved Alcoa, Dow, du Pont, General Motors, Hoffmann-LaRoche,
Novartis, and United Technologies Corporation.
Dr. Whitesides holds an A.B. in Chemistry from Harvard University and a
Ph.D. in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology. He has
received among other awards the National Medal of Science (1998), the
Kyoto Prize for Advanced Technology (2003), the Welch Award (2005), and the
Priestley Medal (2007). An author of more than 980 published science
papers, Whitesides is also co-author, with Felice Frankel, of the book
On the Surface of Things: Images of the Extraordinary in Science.
