Robert Hermann retired from the United Technologies Corporation (UTC) in 1998. At UTC he was Senior Vice President of Science and Technology. Prior to joining UTC in 1982, Dr. Hermann served 20 years with the National Security Agency with assignments in research and development, operations and NATO. He later served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Communications, Command, Control and Intelligence, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Research, Development and Logistics and, in parallel, as Director of the National Reconnaissance Office.
Dr. Hermann has also served on various boards and committees. Presently, he is a Member of the Defense Science Board (since 1985) and the Board of Directors for Orbital Sciences Corporation (since 2002). He was a Member and Chair of the Visiting Committee on Advanced Technology of the National Institute of Standards and Technology from 1992 to 1998, a Member of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board from 1993-2001, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Draper Laboratory from 1995-2001, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American National Standards Institute from 1998-2000.
Dr. Herman holds B.S., M.S. and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Iowa State University.
